May was a very exciting month for Dove Australia, when the Global Dove Marketing team decided to film a new TV commercial for the Dove Self Esteem Fund (DSEF) ... in Melbourne! The advertisement was commissioned to showcase and highlight the great work done by DSEF in the areas of self esteem and body image and will be broadcast internationally.
Dove is committed to challenging the stereotypical perception of beauty and creating positive body image and self esteem amongst young people. In Australia, through the DSEF we deliver BodyThink, a self esteem workshop for young people aged 11-14 years old which is implemented via our charity partner, The Butterfly Foundation. The new international TV commercial reinforces the success of the DSEF in Australia and focuses on a one-off self esteem workshop, which was held especially for the filming.

180 girls and Mums from Ascot Vale Primary School, Melbourne and The Girl Guides Victoria were invited to attend this workshop and be the beautiful face and voice of the Dove Self Esteem Fund around the world. Filmed by an award winning Canadian film crew, the TV commercial features Jessica Weiner, a self esteem expert, author, TV personality and DSEF global ambassador, who travelled especially from the USA to facilitate the workshop.
Through our research, we know that children develop their beliefs and behaviours from adults they love and respect and this workshop, filmed the day before Mother's Day, created a unique bonding activity for mums and daughters, whist at the same time providing them with the necessary tools and activities to help foster positive self-esteem.
As with all BodyThink workshops delivered by the DSEF, this session included a variety of exciting and interactive activities designed to engage the participants and help increase their self esteem. One of the most popular activities of the day was the 'Self Esteem Bubble' activity whereby the girls were invited to create their own self esteem bubble and have a think about who and what they would put inside to help protect themselves from beauty pressures. Research has shown that girls as young as six years old express dissatisfaction with the way they look. Eating disorders and depression are on the rise, while millions of women around the world struggle daily with issues of body image and self worth. The filming of this global TV commercial enabled the delivery of this workshop to 180 young people and their mothers, and also gave them a wonderful and unique opportunity to gain a head start as they face the pressures that lie ahead.
